Universidad de Chile put a turbulent week behind them, securing a crucial victory over Coquimbo Unido on Saturday in a match that reignited their Primera Liga campaign.

Maximiliano Guerrero scored the lone goal for the visiting side, giving Universidad de Chile a 1-0 win at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso stadium. The victory comes just days after the departure of head coach Francisco Meneghini.

The game also marked the debut of 17-year-old Jhon Cortés, who came off the bench and impressed veteran striker Pedro González.

González praised Cortés’ performance, hoping the young player will continue to receive opportunities under interim coach Jhon Valladares or the team’s next permanent manager.

“Particularly interesting player,” González said. “Let’s hope he continues on this path and gets more opportunities. Sometimes young players play well for a bit, then are overlooked and never get another chance.”

“He played few minutes, but you can observe the boy has a lot of potential to proceed far,” González added about the promising newcomer.

The win lifts Universidad de Chile to 10 points in the league standings, easing tensions after a difficult period for the club. González also highlighted the positive impact of the victory, stating it “clears up the strange situations in the locker room and everything.”
