Strasbourg ATH Stuns Dijon in Division 1 Féminine Handball Upset
The Strasbourg ATH pulled off a significant upset on Saturday, defeating JDA Dijon 27-26 in a closely contested match of the French Division 1 Féminine handball league. The victory lifts Strasbourg out of the relegation zone and injects new life into their season.
Despite a strong performance from Dijon at the Palais des Sports, Strasbourg remained resilient. With the score tied at 26-26 with just 1 minute and 20 seconds remaining, Louise Cusset secured the winning goal for Strasbourg, netting her seventh of the match.
Dijon struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game, according to reports. Lilou Pintat led the Dijon attack with a perfect 6-for-6 shooting record, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Strasbourg’s determined play. “I have the impression that we were running at the score the whole match. We were in a bit of a false rhythm,” Pintat said.
The teams traded goals throughout the first half, with Strasbourg initially taking a four-goal lead (5-9) thanks to the accuracy of Elin Karlsson, and Cusset. However, Dijon battled back, and the game remained tight until the final moments. Léa Fargues, the Strasbourg goalkeeper, played a crucial role with 11 saves.
This result marks a turning point for Strasbourg, who were previously in 13th place and facing relegation concerns. The win demonstrates their ability to compete with top teams in the league. Dijon, meanwhile, will need to regroup as they continue their pursuit of a European playoff spot.
The match was part of the 17th day of the Division 1 Féminine season.
