Russia continued its bombardment of Ukraine overnight, with a large-scale aerial attack targeting critical energy infrastructure across the country, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes, reported by Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal on February 7, 2026, come as Moscow’s invasion nears its four-year mark and despite ongoing, U.S.-brokered peace talks. The assault has resulted in widespread power outages and emergency cuts, raising concerns about the capacity of Ukraine’s grid to withstand sustained attacks throughout the harsh winter months.
Ukraine experienced a large-scale aerial attack from Russia overnight, targeting the country’s energy infrastructure, Ukraine’s Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported on Saturday, February 7, 2026. The attacks focused on electricity generation and distribution facilities.
“Russian criminals carried out another massive attack on Ukraine’s energy facilities. The attack is ongoing,” Shmyhal stated on Telegram. The ongoing assault raises concerns about the resilience of Ukraine’s power grid as the country enters a particularly cold winter.
Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state-run grid operator, also reported a “massive attack against Ukraine’s electrical grid infrastructure.” The company stated that emergency power cuts have been implemented across most regions due to damage caused by the strikes. Restoration work will begin “as soon as the security situation allows,” according to Ukrenergo.
Electricity Disruptions Amidst Freezing Temperatures
The attacks come as Moscow continues its invasion of Ukraine, even while both countries are engaged in U.S.-brokered talks aimed at ending the nearly four-year-long conflict. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly accused Russia of deliberately targeting energy infrastructure, leading to widespread outages and leaving hundreds of thousands without power or heating during a period of sub-zero temperatures.
While both nations recently agreed to a significant prisoner exchange, progress on the critical issue of territory remains stalled. On Friday, Moscow accused Ukraine of orchestrating a shooting targeting a senior military intelligence official in the Russian capital, leaving him wounded. Kyiv has not commented on the incident.
The attacks also prompted a precautionary response from neighboring Poland. Authorities reported that two airports in southeastern Poland suspended operations as a safety measure due to the strikes near the Ukrainian border. The Polish military also announced the deployment of aircraft to monitor and protect its airspace, a standard procedure during periods of heavy Russian bombardment in western Ukraine.
