A proposed U.S.-brokered Christmas ceasefire has been rejected by Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Monday, raising fears of intensified fighting during the holiday period [[1]]. Zelenskyy stated that Moscow’s swift refusal signals potential preparations for escalated attacks between December 23-25, prompting an emergency meeting with Ukraine’s military leadership. Despite the bleak outlook for a truce, Ukrainian officials report their defensive lines remain secure amid continued Russian advances in the east and northeast [[3]].
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Russia demonstrated a lack of willingness to compromise after the United States proposed a Christmas ceasefire, a move intended as a gesture of goodwill to potentially open a path to diplomacy. The rejection comes as concerns mount over a potential escalation in attacks during the holiday period.
“The Americans really wanted a Christmas ceasefire. It’s always a kind of signal that the parties want to achieve something in the diplomatic field,” Zelenskyy said, according to Suspilne. “But there will be no truce for Christmas. The Russians immediately emphasized that they will be attacking.”
Zelenskyy indicated that Moscow’s response suggests preparations for further strikes, prompting a meeting of Ukraine’s armed forces’ high command on Monday. He warned that the period between December 23 and December 25 presents the greatest risk of massive missile and drone attacks. “It’s in their nature to carry out some large-scale action during our Christmas,” he stated.
Ukraine officially shifted its Christmas celebrations from January 7, following the Julian calendar, to December 25 in 2022, aligning with the Gregorian calendar and distancing itself from Russian traditions following the invasion.
Moscow previously dismissed proposals for a Christmas ceasefire last week, arguing that a pause in fighting would only allow Ukraine time to regroup.
“Držíme obranné linie”
“We want a full-fledged peace. We do not want the ceasefire to give Ukraine a break so that the Kyiv regime can prepare for the continuation of the war,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, according to Interfax. He added that Moscow’s position is “consistent, transparent, and well known both in the United States and in Ukraine.”
Ukrainian commanders assured Zelenskyy that defensive lines are “firmly holding” against the Russian advance, he reported. While Russian forces have intensified attacks in recent weeks, they have also sustained heavier losses.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian troops continue to defend their positions in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in eastern Ukraine, have regained control of Kupiansk in the northeast, and have stabilized the situation in Huljajpole in southeastern Ukraine.
