Drone incursions linked to the conflict in Ukraine have extended to the Baltic states, with Estonia and Latvia reporting incidents on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. The events highlight the escalating risks of the wider regional impact of the ongoing war.

Authorities in both countries confirmed the drones were part of a larger Ukrainian attack targeting locations within Russia. While no injuries or damage to critical infrastructure were reported, the incidents prompted emergency meetings and raised concerns about airspace security.

Power Plant Affected in Estonia

In Estonia, a drone impacted the chimney of the Auvere Power Plant in Ida-Virumaa County at approximately 3:43 a.m. Local time. Estonian security police stated no one was hurt and the power infrastructure remained undamaged. According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, initial assessments suggest the drone was not intentionally aimed at Estonia or the power plant itself. The Estonian government convened a special cabinet session in response to the incident.

Drone Explodes in Latvia

Latvian military officials reported that an unidentified flying object was detected on radar approaching and crossing Latvian airspace at approximately 2:19 a.m. Local time. Roughly 20 minutes later, the drone self-detonated near the village of Dobricina in the Kraslava municipality, without requiring intervention from Latvian air defense forces.

Prior to this, at around 12:50 a.m. Local time, an object had entered Latvian airspace from Belarus, made a slight turn and continued into Russian airspace. A military spokesperson suggested the unmanned aerial vehicles in both instances may have deviated from their intended course or been disrupted by electronic countermeasures.

Recurring Drone Incidents

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for over four years. Drone warfare, an increasingly prominent aspect of the conflict, also poses a risk to neighboring countries as defense systems attempt to intercept the devices.

Drones have repeatedly crossed into the airspace of Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic states – all close allies and supporters of Ukraine. A Ukrainian drone mistakenly entered Lithuanian airspace on the night of Monday, March 23, 2026, and similar incidents have occurred in Romania and Moldova.

“Drones Over All Three Baltic States”

“The war provoked by Russia’s aggressor has brought us to a point where drones have fallen on the territories of all three Baltic states within 48 hours,” Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said on Wednesday. “air defense is a challenge not only in Lithuania, but throughout NATO.”

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated the drone was not directed at Estonia, adding, “This is a direct consequence of Russia’s comprehensive war of aggression.” Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics also confirmed the drone that crashed in his country was Ukrainian.
