Xi Jinping Pledges Support for Peace Efforts in Ukraine
Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China “supports all efforts conducive to peace” in Ukraine, following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. This reiterates Beijing’s frequently stated position on the conflict. Xi also emphasized the importance of the discussions for “strengthening strategic coordination” with Paris and expanding cooperation in areas such as aerospace and nuclear energy, as well as increased Chinese investment in France.
Macron Urges China to Pressure Russia for Ceasefire
French President Emmanuel Macron is in Beijing seeking China’s support in pushing for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Macron asserted that China has a “decisive role” to play in influencing a cessation of hostilities. He and his wife, Brigitte, were welcomed by Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the Great Hall of the People. The French President stated that France and China must overcome their “differences,” adding that “sometimes there are disagreements, but it is our responsibility to overcome them for the common good.”
This is Macron’s fourth visit to China since taking office in 2017. He is also scheduled to meet with Premier Li Qiang. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated this week that France is counting on China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to put pressure on Russia to agree to a ceasefire. UN Demands Russia Return Ukrainian Children
The United Nations General Assembly has called for the immediate and unconditional return of Ukrainian children allegedly “forcibly transferred” to Russia. The resolution comes as Kyiv and Moscow attempt to negotiate an end to the fighting. The Assembly adopted the non-binding resolution with 91 votes in favor, 12 against, and 57 abstentions. Russia was among the states that rejected the measure. The resolution “calls upon the Russian Federation to ensure the immediate, safe and unconditional return of all children of Ukraine who have been forcibly transferred.” It also urges Moscow to “immediately cease any further practice of forced transfer, deportation, separation from families and legal guardians, change of personal status, including through citizenship, adoption or fostering, and indoctrination of Ukrainian children.” Ukraine has accused Russia of abducting at least 20,000 Ukrainian children since the start of the conflict in February 2022.
