A U.S. military C-130J Super Hercules aircraft landed at Toluca International Airport on January 17, drawing attention due to the aircraft’s role in special operations, logistical missions, and humanitarian aid efforts. The arrival of the military transport plane comes amid heightened U.S. efforts to combat criminal organizations operating in the State of Mexico.

Flight tracking data shows the aircraft departed Dyess Air Force Base in the United States and stopped broadcasting its signal near Toluca. The monitoring platform notes that the visible flight path is an estimate and may not accurately reflect the aircraft’s actual trajectory.

The C-130J, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, displays markings of the U.S. Armed Forces and features four six-bladed turboprop engines, a reinforced fuselage, and a rear cargo ramp – characteristics that make it one of the most versatile aircraft for military deployments and humanitarian support worldwide.

As of January 18, officials have not released a statement explaining the purpose of the flight to the capital of the State of Mexico.

U.S. Pressure Against Cartels with a Presence in the State of Mexico

The aircraft’s arrival follows a period of increased U.S. pressure against criminal groups operating in the State of Mexico, particularly against La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM).

On April 2025, the U.S. government announced economic sanctions and substantial rewards for information leading to the arrest of the leaders of this criminal group, which the State Department considers a drug cartel with operations in the State of Mexico, Michoacán, and Guerrero.

On February 20, the U.S. government formally designated La Nueva Familia Michoacana as a terrorist organization, alongside other criminal groups such as the Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG.
