A U.S. military helicopter near an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela

Good morning. A meeting is scheduled in the UN Security Council to address escalating tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela. Elsewhere, today is the last day for residents of Friesland to vote on bilingual road signs.

Let’s start with the weather: it will remain dry across the board today, but with considerable cloud cover. Some sunshine is possible in the south. Temperatures will reach 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, but a moderate east wind will make it feel colder.

Planning to travel? Here you’ll find an overview of traffic conditions and here you can find information on disruptions and scheduled work on the railways.

What to expect today

  • The United Nations Security Council is expected to discuss rising tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela. The South American nation requested the session due to what it calls U.S. military aggression. The U.S. has been intercepting boats at sea, seized several oil tankers off the coast of Venezuela, and former President Trump has threatened military action on Venezuelan soil.
  • In Friesland, today is the last day to vote on new bilingual road signs. The province already decided that Dutch should be above Frisian for safety reasons. Until today, voters can choose how the letters will look.
  • Darts player Michael van Gerwen will compete in the second round of the World Championship in London. The three-time world champion will face Ireland’s William O’Connor at Alexandra Palace. Van Gerwen lost last year’s final to Britain’s Luke Littler.

Residents of Nunspeet expressed shock and sadness following a tragic accident Monday evening during the town’s light parade. Many people witnessed the event and are “deeply affected,” according to Mayor Céline Blom at a support center for victims.

“It was very distressing,” Blom said, emphasizing the significant impact of the accident. According to police, the incident appears to be accidental, but the exact circumstances are still under investigation.

A 56-year-old woman from the town drove into a group of people waiting to watch the light parade. Nine people were injured, three of them seriously. The driver sustained minor injuries and has been taken into custody.
