Venezuelan political analyst Nicmer Evans, a director of the Punto de Corte portal, was detained by authorities saturday amid growing concerns over press freedom in the country. Evans was taken from his home for questioning by officials believed to be with the bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin), prompting immediate condemnation from human rights groups and political leaders. This incident marks the latest in a pattern of reported harassment and detention of journalists critical of the Maduro government, raising fears of a wider crackdown on dissent.

Venezuelan authorities detained political analyst and director of the Punto de Corte portal, Nicmer Evans, on Saturday, December 13, taking him from his home for questioning. The move has raised concerns about increasing restrictions on independent journalism and political dissent in the South American nation.

According to reports, officials believed to be from the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin) arrived at Evans’ residence and transported him for what they described as an “interview.” Witnesses confirmed that no judicial order was presented, and the transfer was characterized as an “invitation” – a practice frequently criticized by human rights organizations.

Evans, a vocal critic of the government of Nicolás Maduro, has a history of political persecution. He was previously detained in 2020 and held for 51 days. In recent years, he has also reported threats and the detention of members of his online publication’s staff.

Family members and the Punto de Corte team have expressed worry over Evans’ well-being, fearing the incident signals a renewed crackdown on journalists and independent media. The team stated they are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they become available.

Calls for Respect of Human Rights

The detention prompted immediate reactions from political figures and activists. Former Governor César Pérez Vivas denounced the action on his X account, stating, “We denounce the harassment and detention of political analyst Nicmer Evans. A commission from SEBIN went to his home a few minutes ago and transferred him under the pretext of an ‘interview.’ We demand full respect for his rights.” He added that Evans is “a professional and communicator recognized for his commitment to social causes” and called for his immediate release.

Human rights activist Sairam Rivas also raised concerns about the procedure, posting on X: “SEBIN just took Nicmer Evans from his home, under the pretext of an interview. Everything indicates that we are facing a new arbitrary detention.” She called for an end to political persecution and his immediate freedom.

Political leader Andrés Caleca expressed solidarity with Evans, noting that “without legitimacy, without a political base, without social support and without any moral authority to remain in power, their only response is repression.”
