Viral Blueberry Trend Leads to Stomach Stones

A Chinese woman developed severe stomach pain after consuming large quantities of blueberries for two consecutive days in an attempt to follow a viral health trend, according to reports from Thai news outlets.

The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, ate excessive amounts of the fruit hoping to boost her health, inspired by online claims about blueberries’ antioxidant benefits and heart-healthy properties. Instead, she ended up in the hospital with intense abdominal pain, where doctors discovered multiple hard masses in her stomach.

Medical professionals identified the masses as bezoars — solid formations that can occur when certain foods, especially those high in fiber or tannins like blueberries, accumulate in the digestive tract and harden over time. While blueberries are nutritious in moderation, overconsumption without proper digestion can pose risks, particularly for individuals with underlying gastrointestinal conditions.

Doctors warned that four specific groups should exercise caution when eating blueberries: people with a history of stomach surgery, those suffering from gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying), individuals with chronic digestive disorders, and anyone prone to forming bezoars due to reduced gastric motility.

The case serves as a reminder that even foods widely promoted as healthy can cause harm when consumed in extreme amounts or without consideration of individual health factors. Medical experts continue to emphasize balanced consumption and advise against relying on viral trends for dietary decisions without consulting healthcare professionals.
