Volkswagen’s electric vehicle sales surged 56% in Europe year-over-year, driven largely by the success of its new ID.7 model, while Tesla experienced a 27% decline in new car registrations, according to data from JATO Dynamics.
Volkswagen delivered 274,278 all-electric vehicles across the continent, compared to Tesla’s 236,357 units.
The shift in sales figures underscores the intensifying competition in the European EV market. Tesla, once a dominant force, now faces increasing pressure from established European automakers and a growing number of Chinese manufacturers. The company has also been impacted by consumer boycotts following CEO Elon Musk’s public support for far-right political parties in Europe.
Overall, the European electric vehicle market demonstrated strong growth in 2025, with registrations of battery electric vehicles increasing by 29% compared to the previous year. This growth significantly outpaced the overall car market, which saw a more modest increase of 2.3%.
The JATO report analyzed data from 28 European countries, including Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, which are outside of the European Union.
