Volkswagen is taking aim at the competitive entry-level EV market with the forthcoming ID. Polo, slated to launch in late April 2026 with a starting price under €25,000. The new model, previewed as the ID.2all concept in 2023, represents a key part of Volkswagen’s strategy to offer more affordable electric options and directly challenges rivals like Renault’s 5 E-Tech and the Peugeot e-208 . This launch is part of a broader 2026 offensive from the Volkswagen Group, introducing several new EV models across its brands.

Volkswagen is launching a counteroffensive in the increasingly competitive affordable electric vehicle market with the ID. Polo, a model slated to start under €25,000. The new vehicle aims to challenge rivals like Renault’s 5 E-Tech and the Peugeot e-208, as automakers vie for market share in the rapidly expanding EV sector.

Volkswagen announced plans for the ID. Polo, evolving from the ID.2all concept first unveiled in March 2023. The company revealed initial specifications of its entry-level electric vehicle in a press release, excluding its earlier e-up! model.

The automaker is aiming for an aggressive price point, stating the ID. Polo will start below the symbolic €25,000 mark when it launches in late April 2026. This pricing strategy directly targets the Renault 5 E-Tech, currently a leading model in the segment.

The base model will feature a 37 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery and a 116 horsepower motor. Volkswagen estimates a range of 300 km (approximately 186 miles) based on the WLTP cycle. This positions the ID. Polo to compete with the R5 Five, which offers 95 horsepower and a 40 kWh battery for a range of 312 km.

Volkswagen is emphasizing fast-charging capabilities, stating the entry-level version will support DC fast charging at up to 90 kW, achieving an 80% charge in 27 minutes. The company is keen to avoid the issues experienced by Renault with its R5, where fast charging was not available on all trim levels.

MEB+ Platform Promises Improved Performance

Volkswagen’s ID. Polo will utilize an evolved version of its modular electric platform, dubbed MEB+. The batteries, developed by PowerCo and assembled at the company’s German plant in Salzgitter, incorporate a cell-to-pack architecture – similar to that used by BYD – designed to optimize space and efficiency. This move reflects a broader industry trend toward maximizing battery density and reducing costs.

The higher-end version, equipped with a 52 kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery, is projected to deliver a range of 450 km (approximately 280 miles) on the WLTP cycle and support fast charging at up to 130 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in 23 minutes. These figures position the ID. Polo as a competitive offering within the segment.

Volkswagen will offer the new APP 290 motor – standing for “Axe Parallèle Propulsion” and 290 Nm of torque – in three power levels at launch: 116, 135, and 211 horsepower. A 166 kW (226 hp) version will join the lineup later, including a GTI model.

Volkswagen has opted for a pragmatic approach to the chassis, utilizing a torsion beam rear suspension – a cost-effective solution. This decision contrasts with the company’s “accessible premium” branding, as competitors like the Renault 5 feature a more sophisticated multi-link rear suspension, generally offering improved handling dynamics.

Measuring 4.05 meters (approximately 13.3 feet) in length, 1.82 meters (approximately 6 feet) in width, and 1.53 meters (approximately 5 feet) in height, the ID. Polo is positioned as a compact city car, slightly smaller than the current thermal Polo. However, it is wider and taller than its gasoline-powered counterpart.

The trunk offers a generous 435 liters of space, making it one of the largest in the electric city car segment. This represents a 24% increase in cargo capacity compared to the thermal Polo, thanks to the new electric vehicle architecture. The shift to front-wheel drive – from the rear-wheel drive configurations of the ID.3 and ID.4 – frees up valuable space for luggage.

Volkswagen promises five full seats and improved interior space compared to the thermal Polo, thanks to a slightly extended wheelbase of 2.60 meters. The design, still camouflaged, draws heavily from the 2023 ID. 2all concept, featuring a full-width rear light signature and retractable rear door handles.

Further details will be revealed with the official unveiling of the VW ID. Polo, expected in Spring 2026. The Polo is part of a broader family of vehicles, including the Cupra Raval and two SUVs – the VW ID. Cross and the Skoda Epiq – all slated for launch in 2026, marking a significant year for the Volkswagen Group.
