Rabat, Morocco – In a stunning development just months before the start of the World Cup, Morocco national team coach Walid Regragui has stepped down from his position, he confirmed at a late-night news conference on Thursday, March 5, 2026. The move comes as a surprise as the tournament, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, draws closer.
Regragui, who led Morocco to a historic semifinal appearance at the 2022 World Cup – a first for both Africa and the Arab world – faced criticism following the team’s defeat to Senegal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in January. He stated that the team requires “a fresh face, a different energy, and a new perspective with a new coach.”
“I think the team needs a new lease of life before the World Cup, a new vision to continue progressing. My decision to abandon is part of this team’s evolution,” Regragui said.
The Moroccan Football Federation has swiftly appointed Mohamed Ouahbi as Regragui’s replacement. Ouahbi previously managed Morocco’s under-20 team to a Youth World Cup title and will be taking charge of his first senior national team.
“I’m not here to build, due to the fact that the foundations are already in place. I’m here to keep performing,” Ouahbi stated. He will be assisted by João Sacramento, a former assistant coach at Paris Saint-Germain and previously with José Mourinho at Roma, and Tottenham.
Morocco is still seeking its first continental trophy since 1975, and the change in leadership reflects a desire for renewed success. The appointment of Ouahbi signals a commitment to maintaining the team’s competitive edge as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the World Cup.
Regragui’s departure marks a significant shift for the Moroccan national team, and all eyes will be on Ouahbi as he takes the helm and prepares the squad for the upcoming tournament. The team will be looking to build on their previous success and make a strong showing on the world stage.
Barcelona legend Andrés Iniesta has been brought on board by the Moroccan Football Federation, though his specific role was not immediately detailed. VoetbalPrimeur reports that this move is intended to further bolster the team’s preparation and morale.
