The Regional Hospital of Wanica celebrated its sixth anniversary on Saturday, February 7, 2026, with a community health event focused on raising awareness of hypertension and diabetes. These conditions are widespread in Suriname and place a significant burden on the nation’s healthcare system.

During the Mini Info Day, hospital staff offered free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings to attendees, along with educational resources on preventative measures. Hospital Director Nawin Bhageloe emphasized the importance of proactive health management, stating, “Knowledge is a crucial weapon against these conditions. By being mindful of diet, exercise, and lifestyle, many health problems can be prevented.”

Established in 2020, the Regional Hospital of Wanica, with a capacity of 180 beds, represents a major investment in Suriname’s healthcare infrastructure, being the first large hospital built in the country since 1975. The hospital aims to alleviate pressure on the Academic Hospital Paramaribo by providing accessible care closer to communities.

Bhageloe, who has been director for a month and a half, noted that the hospital has experienced some setbacks in development following the COVID-19 pandemic. The current administration is prioritizing expansion of services to better serve residents of Wanica and neighboring districts, including Para and Brokopondo. The hospital currently employs approximately 160 staff members.

Despite challenges related to “brain drain” – the emigration of skilled medical professionals – the hospital is actively working to strengthen its team. Future plans include expanding laboratory and radiology services, as well as developing specialized care offerings, such as obstetrics and maternal and child health. These improvements are intended to establish the Regional Hospital of Wanica as a comprehensive regional healthcare center, effectively meeting the needs of the local population.
