WhatsApp is preparing to introduce an optional subscription service, marking a significant shift for the popular messaging app. While the core functionality of WhatsApp will remain free, the subscription will offer users the ability to customize the app’s appearance and enhance certain features.
The subscription will allow users to pin up to 20 chats, compared to the current limit of three, and will too offer customization options for the app’s icon, color schemes, and access to exclusive stickers, reactions, and ringtones.
Dubbed WhatsApp Plus, the premium features will focus on visual enhancements. Subscribers will be able to choose from 14 different icon styles for the app. 19 different color themes will be available, impacting the overall look and feel of the application – a departure from the previous ability to only customize individual chat threads.
Enhanced Chat Management and Exclusive Content
Another key feature of the subscription will be the ability to pin up to 20 chats to the top of the screen, an increase from the current limit of three. This will allow users to quickly access their most crucial conversations. The subscription will also include exclusive ringtones, each with a distinct style.
Exclusive stickers and more interactive reactions to messages are also planned, with WhatsApp hoping to foster more engaging conversations. The company has confirmed that the subscription will be optional on both iOS and Android platforms, and existing features will remain accessible without a subscription. The functionality is still under development, and the range of features, content, and personalization options available through the subscription is expected to expand over time.
Interestingly, WhatsApp was originally a paid app, costing approximately 25 Kč to download between 2009 and 2016. Android users received a free trial for the first year, followed by a 25 Kč fee. All fees were eliminated on January 18, 2016. Now, after ten years, WhatsApp is returning to direct funding through a subscription model, though it will remain entirely voluntary. The visual improvements may appeal to many users, but the cost of the subscription – which remains unknown – will be a crucial factor.
