Why Janet Jackson Is Missing From Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ and What Critics Are Saying

Janet Jackson will not appear as a character in the new biopic “Michael,” despite her close relationship with her late brother, the King of Pop.

The revelation came during the Los Angeles premiere of the film on Monday, April 21, 2026, where her sister La Toya Jackson spoke with Variety about Janet’s absence.

“I wish everybody was in the movie,” La Toya said. “She was asked and she kindly declined so you have to respect her wishes.”

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson — son of Jermaine Jackson and Michael’s nephew — in the title role. It traces Michael’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his rise as a global superstar in the 1980s.

The movie features portrayals of most of the Jackson siblings, including Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon, as well as their mother Katherine, played by Nia Long, and their father Joe, portrayed by Colman Domingo. La Toya herself is played by Jessica Sula.

Fuqua emphasized the importance of family involvement, telling Variety, “You’re telling somebody’s life, you want to make sure that they’re happy.” He added that while he holds deep respect and love for Janet, her decision not to participate was understood.

“I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you realize it’s OK. She’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters,” Fuqua said.

Janet’s absence was too noted by the absence of her and Paris Jackson from the red carpet event. Rebbie Jackson, the eldest sibling, also skipped the premiere.

Despite not being on screen, Janet has expressed support for her nephew Jaafar’s performance. La Toya shared that after seeing the film, she and other family members often felt as if they were watching Michael himself.

“I thought I was watching my brother,” La Toya said, echoing Marlon Jackson’s sentiment that the portrayal felt eerily authentic.

The film has received backing from Michael’s estate and several family members, including Prince Jackson, who serves as an executive producer and was reportedly on set daily during production. Bigi Jackson also showed his support by attending an earlier premiere in Berlin.

As the film prepares for its wide release on April 24, 2026, Taj Jackson, son of Tito Jackson, took to X to praise the movie and honor his uncle’s legacy.
