Wilfried Kanga is facing increasing criticism from a section of KAA Gent’s supporters after being jeered during the match against STVV on April 20, 2026. The forward was substituted amid boos, only to hear cheers when he left the pitch—a reaction that has sparked debate within the club and among fans.
Head coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck has condemned the treatment of his player but acknowledged the growing frustration. Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, he admitted that Kanga has at times appeared disengaged and quick to claim fouls when challenged.
“There were matches where I found him rather absent,” Vanhaezebrouck said. “He easily gives up the ball but then claims a foul. A defender might hold him briefly and he immediately stops playing. Referees don’t whistle that anymore. He plays like a target man with the rules of indoor soccer—’Don’t touch him or he’ll want a foul.’ I’ve been annoyed by that too. ‘Just maintain going,’ I think.”
Despite his criticism, Vanhaezebrouck emphasized that the jeering crosses a line, even if he understands why some fans are upset.
Assistant coach Rik De Mil echoed similar sentiments, confirming that Kanga has been mentally affected by the backlash but remains resilient in training. De Mil stated that the player has handled the situation well and continues to receive full support from the squad and staff.
“He’s dealt with it pretty well so far,” De Mil said in a Tuesday press conference. “He’s mentally strong, and the players and staff are behind him. That’s going to help him bounce back.”
De Mil added that while Kanga shows readiness to return to the starting lineup, the final decision rests with him regarding timing and suitability for the upcoming clash against Union SG.
The club has urged supporters to refrain from directing abuse at their own players, with both coaches stressing the importance of unity during a challenging period. Kanga, who has been praised for his operate ethic and mentorship of younger teammates like Cissé, remains under contract and is expected to fight for his place amid the ongoing scrutiny.
