Will Smith to Lead High-Stakes Prison Thriller ‘Supermax’ in Major Amazon MGM Deal
Will Smith is set to make a significant return to non-franchise studio cinema, starring in the upcoming action-thriller ‘Supermax’. In a move that signals a strong vote of confidence in the actor, Amazon MGM Studios has secured the worldwide rights to the Miramax project in a deal estimated to be in the $70 million range.
The film, which will skip a theatrical release to stream directly on Prime Video, is described as a “propulsive and twist-laden action thriller.” Smith will portray Rex, one of two FBI agents tasked with investigating a murder that has occurred within the confines of the world’s most secure prison. While Smith’s role is locked in, the studio is currently casting for his partner, a female FBI agent.
Taking the helm is versatile filmmaker David Gordon Green, who is teaming up with Smith for this high-tension project. Green, known for his recent work in the horror genre including the new *Halloween* trilogy and *The Exorcist: Believer*, will bring his distinct style to the prison setting. The screenplay was penned by David Weil and David J. Rosen, the writing duo recognized for their work on the series *Invasion* and *Hunters*.

The production is supported by a heavy-hitting team of producers. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company are producing alongside Will Smith and Adam Fishbach for Smith’s Westbrook. The project also features executive production from Weil, Rosen, and Associate Producer Natalie Weil, as well as Miramax leadership including CEO Jonathan Glickman, President of Film Alexandra Loewy, COO Thom Zadra, and SVP Spencer Ela.
This project marks a strategic shift for Smith, who has spent recent years focusing on franchise entries. The move comes on the heels of the strong global performance of 2024’s *Awful Boys: Ride or Die*, which grossed over $400 million worldwide. By stepping into a standalone thriller, Smith continues to solidify his status as one of the industry’s most consistent leading men.
Production for ‘Supermax’ is scheduled to begin in August 2026.
