Willson Contreras has received final approval from the tournament’s insurance company and will be able to wear the uniform of Venezuela in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

After weeks of uncertainty surrounding the medical and administrative protocols that often hold back Major League stars, the Milwaukee Brewers catcher is officially joining the “Team Beisbol Venezuela” led by manager Omar López.

A fundamental pillar on the official roster

Contreras’ confirmation is significant. The younger brother from the Puerto Cabello dynasty has established himself as one of the elite offensive and defensive catchers in MLB. His presence in the lineup provides vital strategic flexibility:

  • Elite Catching: He will share duties behind the plate with captain Salvador Pérez.

  • Impact Hitter: His ability to hit for extra bases makes him a natural candidate for the heart of the batting order or as a designated hitter.

  • Young Leadership: At 28 years ancient, he represents the new face of the national team on the international stage.

Contrast with Willson Contreras’ situation

With William receiving the green light, more pieces presented by manager Omar López in the roster are being confirmed, remembering that a few days ago the confirmation of his brother Wilson Contreras was also announced.

Venezuela in the “Group of Death”

With Contreras guaranteed to play, Venezuela strengthens its arsenal to face Group D at the loanDepot Park in Miami, where they will compete against:

  1. Dominican Republic (The major regional rival).

  2. Netherlands (A historically challenging opponent).

  3. Israel.

  4. Nicaragua.
