Windows 11 continues to be the world’s most popular operating system, despite recent controversies surrounding technical problems caused by a series of failed updates.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently confirmed that Windows 11 is now installed on more than 1 billion devices globally. Remarkably, it reached this milestone in just 1,576 days – approximately 4 years and 4 months – exceeding the previous record set by Windows 10, which took 1,706 days.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the current challenges facing the operating system. Recent updates have been plagued with issues, drawing criticism from users online.

The situation escalated in late January, when Microsoft was forced to release patches to address errors introduced by previous patches. More recently, Pavan Davuluri, President of Windows and Devices, announced in an interview with The Verge that the company will pause AI integrations in the operating system throughout 2026 to focus on resolving these issues.

This situation highlights a contrast between dedicated users and the general public. While some users have voiced concerns about Microsoft’s decisions regarding Windows 11, the majority remain satisfied with the system as a functional tool for work and entertainment. The widespread adoption suggests a level of user tolerance and reliance on the platform despite the reported issues.

Windows 11 Remains Dominant on Steam

Further demonstrating its popularity, Valve recently released the results of its latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey, which collects data on the hardware and software configurations used by its user base.

The data shows that Windows 11 continues to be the most popular operating system on the platform, with 66.71% of users utilizing it as their primary system – a 0.11% increase from the previous month. This isn’t surprising, given Windows 11’s improved support for hardware and software features on modern PCs.

Despite Valve’s announcement that Windows 10 will cease receiving security updates in October, the operating system saw a 0.28% increase in its user base, solidifying its position as the second most popular with 27.79% of the total. Meanwhile, Linux, which had been experiencing consistent growth in recent months, experienced a 0.20% decrease, falling to 3.38%. While still trailing Windows significantly, Linux continues to position itself as a viable alternative for those willing to try it.
