Windows 11 April Update Causes ‘Death Loop’ and Reboot Issues – Microsoft Issues Fixes

Microsoft’s April 2026 Windows 11 update, KB5083769, has triggered significant issues for some users, including boot loops and BitLocker recovery prompts, according to multiple reports.

The update, released on April 14, 2026, for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, includes security fixes and quality improvements but has introduced problems affecting specific hardware configurations. Some users have reported being trapped in continuous reboot cycles, with screens displaying pixelated mosaics followed by Blue Screen of Death errors, particularly on HP and Dell systems.

Microsoft has confirmed that devices with certain BitLocker Group Policy settings may require users to enter their recovery key after installing the update. This occurs when BitLocker is enabled on the operating system drive and the “Configure TPM platform validation profile for native UEFI firmware configurations” policy includes PCR7 in the validation profile—a setup the company describes as unrecommended.

In addition to the BitLocker-related problems, the update has been linked to broader boot failures that Microsoft characterizes as affecting a small number of systems. The company suggests troubleshooting steps such as using System Restore, Startup Repair, or performing a local reinstall through the Windows Recovery Environment to resolve these critical failures.

Separately, Microsoft has warned that Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices are set to expire starting in June 2026, which could impact secure boot functionality if not updated in advance. The company recommends reviewing certificate expiration guidance and taking preparatory action to avoid disruption.

These issues add to a pattern of post-update complications seen with previous Windows 11 releases, where changes to boot-critical components or drivers have occasionally led to recovery scenarios requiring user intervention.
