Italy Edges Past U.S. In Milan Winter Olympics Curling Action
Italy secured a narrow 7-6 victory over the United States in round-robin play at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics curling mixed doubles competition on Saturday, February 9th. The win keeps Italy firmly in contention as the tournament progresses.
The match, played on February 9th, saw a tight contest with the score tied 2-2 after the first four ends. Italy then capitalized with a strong fifth conclude, scoring four points to gain a significant advantage. The U.S. Team battled back, scoring two points in each of the next two ends, but Italy managed to secure a crucial point in the eighth end to close out the game.
The United States entered the match with a 6-2 record, temporarily holding second place in the standings, while Italy closely followed.
Elsewhere in the mixed doubles curling competition on February 9th, Czech Republic defeated Estonia 8-4, Norway beat South Korea 8-5, and Canada overpowered Switzerland 8-4.
Great Britain became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals on February 7th. Following the February 8th matches, the United States, Italy, and Sweden all secured spots in the semi-finals.
Estonia finished at the bottom of the standings after the round-robin stage. The mixed doubles curling tournament, featuring 10 teams, consists of a round-robin format followed by semi-finals and a final to determine the gold medal winner. The championship game is scheduled for February 10th. China did not participate in this year’s mixed doubles competition.
Italy previously stunned the curling world by winning the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, with Norway and Great Britain taking silver and bronze respectively.
