A 25-year-old woman remains hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on a busy Monterrey thoroughfare, officials confirmed Thursday. The incident has garnered attention after initial reports of her death circulated on social media.

Hortensia Guardado Sánchez was hit February 9 on Avenida Paseo de los Leones, near Cumbres Tercer Sector, after entering traffic lanes in what authorities believe was a state of disorientation. The case underscores the challenges faced by first responders dealing with individuals experiencing mental health crises.

Nuevo León State Attorney General Javier Flores Saldívar clarified that reports of Guardado’s death are false, stating she is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital. “As far as we understand, she remains injured, in a delicate state of health, but she is still alive,” Flores Saldívar said.

According to authorities, Guardado reportedly exited a vehicle she was traveling in with family members before entering the roadway. Details surrounding the circumstances that led to her entering traffic have not been released, but officials indicated a possible connection to an underlying mental health condition. The incident is currently under investigation.

The attorney general’s statement aimed to dispel misinformation spreading on social media regarding Guardado’s condition. She is being treated for serious injuries, including head trauma, multiple fractures, and internal bleeding.
