Teh women’s Olympic alpine downhill competition is underway in Milano cortina, with the gold medal to be decided today [[1]].Following Friday’s men’s downhill which saw Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen claim gold-the first medal of the Games [[3]]-all eyes are now on the female competitors, including a highly anticipated performance from American veteran Lindsey Vonn. Austria will also be looking to end a lengthy medal drought in the event, having not reached the podium as Lizz Görgl’s bronze in 2010 [[2]].

Will Austria End Its Medal Drought?

Austria hasn’t won a medal in the Olympic downhill event for 16 years (last a bronze for Lizz Görgl in 2010), and their last gold in the event came 20 years ago with Michaela Dorfmeister. Today, the Austrian Ski Federation is sending four strong contenders – Cornelia Hütter, Mirjam Puchner, Nina Ortlieb, and Ariane Rädler – hoping to break that streak.
