Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held discussions with European leaders and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg ahead of a planned meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump tomorrow.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also participated in the calls. Following the conversations, Zelenskyy stated that “strong positions are needed both at the front and in diplomacy to prevent Putin from manipulating and evading a real and just end to the war.”
Canada Announces New Aid Package
Zelenskyy visited Canada today, where he met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. During the visit, Trudeau announced a new aid package for Ukraine totaling 1.6 billion euros.
This support is crucial for Ukraine as fighting continues and Ukrainian forces remain largely on the defensive. Russia launched attacks across Ukraine today, leaving one million people in Kyiv without power.
“Russia continues to torment our cities and our people,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “Moscow has even rejected proposals for a Christmas ceasefire and is increasing the brutality of its missile and drone attacks.”
Seeking Security Guarantees
Tomorrow, Zelenskyy will meet with Trump in Florida. Ukraine is seeking security guarantees from Trump in the event that Russia does not adhere to any agreements reached. These guarantees are part of a 20-point Ukrainian plan that also includes a potential withdrawal from the Donetsk region if Russia withdraws from occupied territory.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated its desire to end the war with Russia and is approaching negotiations constructively. However, Zelenskyy emphasized that there are “red lines,” and that certain proposals involve significant concessions from Ukraine. “We will communicate this to our people, because the population of Ukraine has the final say,” he said.
Zelenskyy announced this evening that he will hold further discussions with European leaders following his meeting with Trump.
