Zelensky Seeks Peace Talks with Trump at Mar-a-Lago

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with former U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, seeking support for a new peace proposal aimed at ending the nearly four-year-long conflict with Russia. The meeting comes amid heightened tensions following a recent large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, underscoring the urgency of finding a diplomatic solution.

The 20-point plan, developed through weeks of negotiations between the United States and Ukraine, has not been endorsed by Moscow. This marks the first in-person meeting between Zelensky and Trump since October, when Trump reportedly declined Zelensky’s request for long-range Tomahawk missiles. The development underscores the complex dynamics influencing the search for peace in the region.

During a stop in Canada on Saturday, Zelensky expressed hope for “very constructive” discussions, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin had revealed his intentions with the recent assault on the Ukrainian capital. Following the talks in Canada, the Canadian government pledged an additional $1.8 billion in funding to support Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.

“This attack is, once again, Russia’s response to our peace efforts. And this has truly shown that Putin does not want peace,” Zelensky stated.

Prior to the meeting with Trump, Zelensky held a conference call with European leaders who, according to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reaffirmed their full support for his peace initiatives. Russia has accused Ukraine and its European allies of attempting to undermine a previous U.S.-mediated peace plan. European Union leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, who participated in the call, reiterated the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine and pledged to continue pressuring the Kremlin to reach an agreement.

Trump had not publicly commented on the new peace proposal before the meeting. He previously stated, in an interview with Politico on Friday, “Zelensky has nothing until I approve it.”

The discussions centered on a plan that would effectively end the war along current front lines and could require Ukraine to withdraw troops from eastern regions, potentially establishing demilitarized buffer zones. While the proposal represents Kyiv’s most explicit acknowledgment of potential territorial concessions to date, it does not include a withdrawal from the 20% of the Donetsk region that Ukraine still controls – a key territorial demand from Russia.

Trump has made ending the wars in Ukraine and Gaza a central theme of his self-proclaimed second term as a “peace president.” However, the war in Ukraine has proven more challenging than he anticipated, and he has repeatedly expressed frustration with both sides for failing to secure a ceasefire.
