Security Guarantees for Ukraine
On January 8, Zelenskyy announced that a bilateral document outlining U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine had been effectively drafted, with final approval expected at the highest political level.
January 7 also saw Ukrainian and U.S. representatives agree to further discussions at the leadership level following another round of negotiations in Paris, where they also addressed key elements of a plan to end the war.
Adding another layer to the diplomatic activity, Kirill Dmitriev, a special representative of the Kremlin, was observed at the U.S. Embassy in Paris on January 7, reportedly for a meeting with embassy officials.
A meeting took place in Paris on January 6, bringing together representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and the so-called “Coalition of the Willing.” Participants confirmed a shared position in seeking a sustainable peace and agreed to continue support for Kyiv. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, reported that specific agreements were reached during the talks.
Ukraine and its partners are currently discussing security guarantees covering land, air, and sea domains, with a response regarding the timeline for U.S. guarantees anticipated during the potential meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump.
