Kyiv-Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pledged a response to a recent Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia that directly impacted civilian infrastructure, as fighting intensifies across multiple regions. The January 28th attack, which damaged dozens of homes and left thousands without essential services, underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Ukrainian cities to Russian attacks despite nearly two years of full-scale war. Zelenskyy addressed the deteriorating situation-including heating outages affecting hundreds of buildings in Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih-during a Wednesday meeting with officials, demanding quicker action to restore basic utilities to affected citizens.

Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia prompts pledge of response from Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed a response to a recent Russian strike on the city of Zaporizhzhia, which directly hit a residential area. The attack underscores the ongoing threat to civilian populations as the conflict continues. Zelenskyy announced the commitment following a meeting Wednesday, January 28, to discuss the situation in several regions facing increased Russian attacks, including Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, and the Sumy region.

“Work is continuing in Zaporizhzhia following the Russian MLRS strike on the city. This was a direct hit on a residential area, with no military targets nearby. We will justly respond to Russia for this and other similar shelling,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.

As of Wednesday morning, 243 homes in Kryvyi Rih were without heating, and more than 700 buildings in Kyiv faced the same issue, according to Zelenskyy. Over 700 residential buildings remained without heat in Kyiv.

“Repair crews are working to their maximum capacity. Teams from across the country have been deployed to assist the capital. However, significantly more speed is needed in decision-making at the city level in Kyiv,” Zelenskyy stated.

He noted that energy companies, utility services, and Ukraine’s State Emergency Service are working “around the clock to restore basic living conditions for people.”

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 6,200 people received hot meals at support and warming centers yesterday. Sufficient resources are available to increase the capacity of these centers and the volume of hot meals provided, if necessary,” Zelenskyy added.

The developments come after a Russian military strike on Zaporizhzhia Wednesday morning, which injured four people and damaged 12 residential buildings. A resulting fire damaged over 100 apartments and 20 vehicles.

Separately, overnight drone strikes by Russia on the Belgorod community in the Kyiv region killed two people and injured four others.
