Zuckerberg joins Bezos & Brady in Miami’s Billionaire Island

Indian Creek Village is among the world’s most prestigious addresses. Located in Miami, west of Surfside on Biscayne Bay, it’s one of the most exclusive enclaves favored by billionaires and celebrities.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly purchased property on the private island for nearly $200 million, according to local real estate agents. He and his wife, Priscilla Chan, will become neighbors to figures including Ivanka Trump, Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, and Jeff Bezos, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The couple plans to move in April, sources familiar with the island’s residents have indicated.

Curiosidades sobre a ilha

Indian Creek embodies luxury and exclusivity. With fewer than one hundred residents, the territory wasn’t originally natural – a century ago it was merely a sand and mud shoal resulting from excavations in Biscayne Bay.

The island was created in the early 20th century as part of an ambitious project to develop a large tract of land facing Surfside. However, the initiative remained unfinished, and the enclave ultimately transformed into a haven for ultra-luxury real estate.

Indian Creek Island Village was officially incorporated in 1939. The first constructions were summer homes intended for Miami’s elite. While none of these original buildings have been preserved, residences dating back to the 1950s remain. Over time, many owners ceased using their properties as vacation homes and established them as permanent residences.

The exclusivity is such that even property ownership doesn’t guarantee access to the island’s private golf club. “You may not be accepted into the club even if you live here,” explained a luxury property specialist. The golf course is considered one of the best in Florida, though it remains outside the traditional amateur circuit.

Until now, Zuckerberg resided in Palo Alto, California. In 2011, he purchased a 520-square-meter home in the Crescent Park neighborhood on Edgewood Drive. Over time, he expanded his presence in the area, investing more than $110 million in at least eleven nearby properties, according to The New York Times.

Five of these properties were integrated into a large main house that included a guest house, a pickleball court, a pool with a hydraulic floor, and even a statue of his wife. He also built a 650-square-meter basement that neighbors nicknamed “the billionaire’s batcave.”

Another of his properties was used as a private school, although this use was prohibited by the city’s urban code.

The constant construction, security movement, and increased surveillance caused inconvenience to residents. Nine neighbors—seven of them anonymously—said they endured eight years of daily construction.

“No neighborhood wants to feel occupied, but that’s precisely what they did,” said Michael Kieschnick, whose residence borders Zuckerberg’s properties on three sides.

California is experiencing an exodus of wealthy residents, driven, according to the Wall Street Journal, by the state government’s intention to implement an additional 5% tax on the wealthiest estates.

Florida has become particularly attractive as the state does not levy state income tax.

Zuckerberg is not the only tech executive choosing the Sunshine State. Larry Page, Google’s co-founder, recently acquired two luxury residences in Coconut Grove, Miami, for more than $173 million, according to Realtor.
