Raw Lettuce Consumption Leads to Severe Parasitic Infection in Shenzhen Child
A six-year-old boy in Shenzhen, China, developed alarming systemic bruising and hematomas after eating raw lettuce, a condition that initially led his parents to fear he was suffering from leukemia. However, medical examinations later revealed the cause was a parasitic infection that severely impaired the child’s blood clotting abilities.
The incident underscores the critical importance of food hygiene and the risks associated with soil-transmitted parasites in agricultural produce, a concern that remains a public health challenge in various regions globally.
According to reports from the Shenzhen Evening Post, the child, identified by the pseudonym Xiao Ming, began exhibiting symptoms approximately one week after a family meal where he consumed grilled meat wrapped in raw lettuce. His parents noticed the appearance of numerous blue-purple bruises and hematomas of varying sizes across his torso, and limbs. The affected areas were painful to the touch, and the boy suffered from lethargy and a loss of appetite.
Fearing a diagnosis of blood cancer, the parents rushed the boy to the pediatric department of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Initial blood tests provided some relief, as his hemoglobin and platelet counts were found to be within normal ranges, effectively ruling out leukemia.
However, further analysis revealed a significant abnormality: the proportion of eosinophils in the boy’s white blood cells had surged to 46.2%, vastly exceeding the normal range of 0.5% to 5%. Following a series of fecal tests and cultures, doctors identified the presence of hookworm eggs and larvae.
The medical team diagnosed the boy with “Acquired Platelet Dysfunction associated with Eosinophilia” (APDE). This rare reaction occurs when hookworm larvae enter the body through the mouth and colonize the intestines. The presence of these parasites triggers an abnormal immune response that interferes with the normal functioning of platelets, which are essential for blood clotting.
Medical experts explained that when platelets fail to function correctly, microvessels can rupture under even slight pressure, leading to the accumulation of blood under the skin and the formation of large bruises and hematomas.
Hookworms are common intestinal parasites whose eggs are frequently found in contaminated soil. Because lettuce grows close to the ground, it is susceptible to contamination if the farmland uses insufficiently fermented organic fertilizers or if the irrigation water is polluted.
The case serves as a stark reminder for caregivers to ensure that raw vegetables are thoroughly washed before consumption to prevent the ingestion of microscopic parasites that can lead to severe systemic health complications.
