Gaza Ceasefire Achieved as Biden, Trump Praise Agreement; Hostages and Detainees Released

A ceasefire in Gaza took effect today, resulting in the release of all 20 living Israeli hostages and thousands of Palestinian detainees, in a deal lauded by both current and former US presidents.

Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris both publicly commended President Donald Trump for his role in brokering the agreement, marking a rare bipartisan moment of acknowledgment. Harris described the deal as “an important first step toward a more hopeful future.” Trump, speaking before the Israeli parliament, hailed a “historic dawn of a new Middle East” as the initial phase of the agreement unfolded. The release of hostages and detainees offers a glimmer of hope for families impacted by the ongoing conflict.

The first phase of the agreement focused on securing the release of hostages and detainees, but the more challenging second phase – dismantling Hamas and determining Gaza’s future leadership – remains to be negotiated. Renewed tensions in the region could derail progress if a sustainable long-term solution isn’t found. Meanwhile, a separate test of SpaceX’s Starship megarocket completed a successful hour-long flight yesterday, a key step toward NASA’s goal of returning to the moon by 2027, according to NASA.

Elsewhere, at least one death has been confirmed following a powerful storm that struck western Alaska over the weekend, and several major US airports are refusing to air a political video from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem regarding the ongoing government shutdown. The shutdown, now in its 14th day, prompted House Speaker Mike Johnson to warn that the US is “barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history.” Financial markets experienced volatility last week following President Trump’s threat of new tariffs on Chinese imports, but have since partially recovered; you can learn more about tariffs and their impact on Investopedia.

Officials say the next round of Gaza negotiations will focus on establishing a peacekeeping force and the potential formation of a Palestinian state.
