Mexico CityS fútbol landscape could be on the verge of a notable shift as Atlante FC reportedly nears a deal to acquire Liga MX club Mazatlán FC. The potential acquisition, led by Emilio Escalante, would mark Atlante’s return to the top flight after eleven years, following their relegation in 2014, and signals a possible relocation from Mazatlán to the nation’s capital. While the transaction requires approval from Liga MX leadership and owners, sources indicate preliminary discussions regarding a move to the historic Estadio Azteca are underway.

Atlante Pursues Liga MX Return Through Mazatlán FC Acquisition

A potential shakeup is brewing in Liga MX as Atlante FC is reportedly in advanced talks to purchase Mazatlán FC, potentially paving the way for the “Potros de Hierro” (Iron Colts) to rejoin the top Mexican league for the Apertura 2026 season. This would mark Atlante’s return to Liga MX after being relegated in the Clausura 2014 season.

Sources indicate that discussions between the two clubs have been productive throughout November, with Emilio Escalante leading the charge to bring Atlante back to the highest level of Mexican soccer through the acquisition of the Mazatlán franchise, currently owned by Grupo Salinas.

While Liga MX officials have yet to be formally notified of the potential transaction, and operations at Mazatlán FC continue as usual, the club’s leadership has reportedly engaged with the Sinaloa state government regarding a possible relocation to Mexico City following a sale to Atlante FC.

If the deal is finalized, the change of ownership and potential relocation would likely be announced after the Liga MX owners’ meeting in May, requiring approval from league members. The move would need to be ratified by the Liga MX partners at a subsequent official meeting.

The Estadio Azteca is emerging as a preferred venue for Atlante, should the team return to the capital. The iconic stadium could once again become the home pitch for the historic club, adding another layer of excitement to their potential return to the Liga MX.
