Zalaegerszeg upset Győr with a 1–0 victory on Friday night in a match from Hungary’s top-flight league, the NB I (Fizz Liga).
After a two-week break, the 2025-2026 NB I season resumed Friday night in Győr, where the sixth-place hosts welcomed eighth-place Zalaegerszeg. Despite being separated by only two positions in the standings, ETO entered the match with a seven-point advantage over their opponents, and a game in hand.
Both teams had secured important wins before the international break: Győr delivered a convincing performance in a 3-0 victory over Újpest, while Zalaegerszeg defeated Diósgyőr at home.
The match kicked off under intense snowfall after referee Bence Csonka signaled the start. Despite the frigid conditions, a strong crowd filled the ETO Park, and the visiting supporters also created a lively atmosphere. The first half was a balanced affair, lacking clear-cut chances. The home side, enjoying 59% of the possession compared to 41% for Zalaegerszeg, came closest to breaking the deadlock. In the 41st minute, Daniel Stefulj’s shot narrowly missed the post, and Szabolcs Schön headed against the crossbar in the 45th. The teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.
ETO started the second half with the same attacking intent they finished the first. Schön headed a ball into the box in the 59th minute, and Nadir Benbuali’s header from seven yards out was brilliantly saved by Gundel-Takács Bence. Just a minute later, Zalaegerszeg threatened on the counter: a pass from Calderón found Maxsuell, who hit the right post from 11 yards, before Alen Skribek curled a shot towards the left side of the goal in the 65th minute, with Joao Victor’s follow-up attempt sailing over the bar.
The snow continued to fall, but the game’s tension finally broke in the 82nd minute. Bakti Balázs, who had entered the match as a substitute moments earlier, skillfully dribbled down the right flank and unleashed a stunning shot into the bottom-right corner, giving the visitors the lead. (0–1)
Szabolcs Schön had a late chance to equalize, but his shot was well-saved by Gundel-Takács Bence, who got down to his right to deny the attempt.
The score remained unchanged, resulting in an upset in this Western Hungary derby. Zalaegerszeg’s victory moves them further away from the relegation zone, while Győr remain in sixth place.
