Algeria’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup is taking shape as the national team gears up for a crucial three-stage buildup ahead of their tournament opener against defending champions Argentina.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed that the Verts will begin their final preparations with a training camp in Algiers starting May 25, 2026. This initial phase will focus on physical conditioning and team cohesion before the squad moves on to the next stage of their buildup.
Following the Algiers camp, Algeria will travel to the Netherlands for a high-profile friendly against the Dutch national team on June 3. The match in Rotterdam is described as a “grandeur nature” test designed to fine-tune tactical preparations against a world-class opponent.
The final preparatory step will see the team head to the United States, where they are scheduled to play an international friendly in Kansas City on June 10. The match, made possible through a partnership with Air Algérie, will come exactly one week before Algeria’s World Cup campaign kicks off.
Algeria has been drawn into Group J alongside Argentina, Austria and Jordan. Their opening match against Lionel Messi’s Argentina is set for June 17 and has already generated significant attention as one of the tournament’s most anticipated fixtures.
However, reports indicate that logistical challenges may affect the original plan for a second friendly in the United States. Visa complications for potential opponents have raised concerns, with the FAF reportedly exploring alternatives after initial talks with Italy fell through due to the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the tournament.
Meanwhile, head coach Vladimir Petkovic remains under contract with the FAF through July 2026, with his automatic extension tied to the qualification achievement secured earlier in the cycle. His future beyond the World Cup will depend on the team’s performance in the United States, Canada, and Mexico-hosted tournament.
