A large fire has erupted on a tanker in the Black Sea off the coast of Turkey,triggering a major rescue operation involving Turkish naval and coast guard assets Sunday evening. The 274-meter KAIROS, carrying a crew of 25, reportedly caught fire approximately 30 nautical miles off Kefken, with initial reports suggesting a potential mine strike as a possible cause. All personnel have been safely evacuated from both the KAIROS and a second tanker, the VIRAT, which also reported being struck further offshore, according to the turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

MÜRETTABAT TAHLİYE EDİLDİ, DURUMLARI İYİ
Kocaeli Valisi İlhami Aktaş, NTV’ye yaptığı açıklamada, gemiye ulaşıldığını ve mürettebattan 24 kişinin tahliye edildiğini kaydetti. Aktaş, mürettebatın durumunun iyi olduğunu, gemideki yangının ise devam ettiğini söyledi.
Vali Aktaş son durumu şöyle anlattı: “Saat 18.00 sıralarında Kefken açıklarında yaklaşık 30 mil uzaklıkta, Rusya’ya gitmekte olan bir gemide yangın meydana geliyor. Yaklaşık 25 kişilik bir mürettebatı var. İlgili kurumlar denizden müdahale için olayın haberini alır almaz harekete geçtiler. Karada da sağlık ekipleri hazırlıkları yapıldı. Bölgeye ulaşıldı. Mürettebatın tahliyesi devam ediyor şu an. Mürettebattakilerin durumun iyi olduğu bilgisi geldi. Yangın gemide devam ediyor. Gemide bir kişi kaldı. Onu da kurtarma çalışmaları sürüyor. Şu an söndürme çalışmaları devam ediyor” dedi.
Ulaştırma ve Altyapı Bakanlığı’ndan yapılan açıklamada ise mürettebatın tamamının gemiden tahliye edildiği duyuruldu. Açıklama şöyle:
“Mısır’dan Rusya’ya seyir halindeyken (İstanbul Türkeli Feneri’ne 52 mil mesafede) Karadeniz’de patlama ve yangın meydana geldiği ihbarı alınan *KAIROS isimli ve içinde 25 kişi bulunan 274 metre boyundaki tanker için,* Ulaştırma ve Altyapı Bakanlığımıza ait KEGM-9 ve KEGM-10 hızlı tahlisiye (can kurtarma) botlarımız, KURTARMA-12 Römorkörümüz ve NENE HATUN Acil Müdahale Gemimiz *olay yerine ivedilikle yönlendirilmiş olup gemide bulunan 25 personel, KEGM-10 botumuzca denizden sağlıklı bir şekilde alınmıştır.”

Öte yandan Ulaştırma ve Altyapı Bakanlığı Denizcilik Genel Müdürlüğü, Karadeniz’de takribi 35 deniz mili açıkta isabet aldığını bildiren VIRAT isimli tanker için olay yerine kurtarma unsurlarının yönlendirildiğini ve gemideki 20 personelin durumunun iyi olduğunu bildirdi.
Genel Müdürlük, ABD merkezli X şirketinin sosyal medya platformundaki hesabından konuya ilişkin paylaşımda bulundu.
Paylaşımda, “VIRAT isimli tanker, Karadeniz’de takribi 35 deniz mili açıkta isabet aldığını bildirmiş, olay yerine kurtarma unsurları ve ticari gemi yönlendirilmiştir. Gemideki 20 personelin durumu iyi olup makine dairesinde yoğun duman tespit edilmiştir. Süreç takip edilmektedir” ifadesi kullanıldı.
A large tanker ship caught fire in the Black Sea off the coast of Turkey on Sunday, prompting a large-scale rescue operation. The incident underscores the risks associated with maritime transport in the region.
Authorities in Kocaeli province reported the fire broke out on a foreign-flagged vessel near Kefken around 6:00 PM local time. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, but initial reports suggest a possible mine strike.
According to a statement from the Kocaeli Governor’s Office, emergency response teams – including the Coast Guard, Search and Rescue, and ambulance services – were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Kocaeli Governor İlhami Aktaş confirmed to local media that all 25 crew members aboard the 274-meter *KAIROS* tanker have been safely evacuated. “The crew is in good condition, but the fire continues to burn on the ship,” Aktaş said. He added that one crew member was initially left on board, but rescue efforts were underway to reach them.
The Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure later announced that all personnel had been successfully removed from the vessel. “Our KEGM-9 and KEGM-10 fast rescue boats, KURTARMA-12 tugboat, and NENE HATUN Emergency Response Vessel were immediately dispatched to the scene upon receiving a report of an explosion and fire on the *KAIROS*, a 274-meter tanker with 25 people on board, sailing from Egypt to Russia (52 nautical miles from the Istanbul Turkish Lighthouse in the Black Sea),” the ministry stated. “All 25 personnel on board were safely taken from the sea by our KEGM-10 boat.”
The Turkish Navy has also deployed two ships and an aircraft to assist in the response.
Reuters reported that investigators are considering the possibility that the tanker struck a mine, and that the vessel is at risk of sinking.
Separately, the Turkish Directorate General of Maritime Affairs reported that another tanker, the *VIRAT*, signaled it had been struck approximately 35 nautical miles offshore. Rescue teams were dispatched to that location as well, and officials said the 20 crew members on board the *VIRAT* are in good condition, though heavy smoke was detected in the engine room. The incident was first reported via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, by the U.S.-based maritime security company.
