Rokiškis, Lithuania, celebrated the holiday season Friday with a festive tree lighting ceremony featuring animated projections, lasers, and fireworks, culminating in a heartwarming story about family and the spirit of Christmas.
The event centered around a theatrical narrative projected onto a local building, telling the tale of a young boy named Mykoliukas whose mother was unable to return home for the holidays due to a snowstorm in London. The story unfolded as the building appeared to come to life, depicting the family’s preparations for Christmas and Mykoliukas’s sadness at his mother’s absence.
“All the residents of the house are preparing for Christmas: baking pies, decorating Christmas trees… Only little Mykoliukas is sad alone before the holidays at home, because his mother cannot return home from London due to a blizzard,” the narration explained.
Rokiškis District Mayor Ramūnas Godeliauskas then appealed to Lithuanian Santa Claus for help, hoping he could stop the storm and reunite Mykoliukas with his mother. According to the story, Santa Claus, with the aid of his reindeer and helpers, successfully calmed the blizzard, allowing the mother to return home.
Following the happy resolution of the story, Mayor Godeliauskas and city elder Arūnas Krasauskas officially illuminated the main Christmas tree in Rokiškis. The event underscored the importance of community and the enduring power of the holiday spirit.
Musical performances throughout the evening featured Augustė Vedrickaitė, the “Akoladė” children’s vocal group from the Rokiškis Cultural Center, the vocal group “Bella Fa,” and actors from the Rokiškis Cultural Center’s theater.
The celebration concluded with a fireworks display. Organizers described the tree lighting as a moment of connection, creativity, and light, intended to bring joy to residents as they anticipate the upcoming holidays.
