What Happened at the Start of the Fifth Season?

Hawkins was under siege, with dimensional rifts opening and unleashing the terrifying Demogorgons from the Upside Down, while the town was placed under military quarantine.
The search for Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, intensified. She and Hopper (David Harbour) battled sinister forces within a military base in the Upside Down, encountering a horrifying wall of flesh and the chilling government scientist, Dr. Kay, portrayed by Terminator star Linda Hamilton.
A major reveal came as Will discovered he possesses supernatural powers. Meanwhile, something unusual was unfolding in a cave with Max and Holly, and Vecna in his earlier, chilling incarnation as Henry Creel.
With plenty of loose ends to tie up, fans are hoping the finale lives up to expectations, after endings to series like Game of Thrones and Lost proved controversial and disappointing for some.
Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy stated that the final episode of the series, the longest yet, has been crafted with special care for its massive global fanbase.
“They’ve experienced disappointments with shows they loved that didn’t deliver for their fans in the end,” he recently told Variety, adding that the series’ creators, the Duffer Brothers, “didn’t want to, don’t want to, and refuse to be one of those shows.”
What’s the Significance of the Cave?

Fans are eager to understand why Henry Kreel, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, appears frightened outside the cave sheltering Max Mayfield and Holly Wheeler.
They seem trapped within one of Henry’s earliest memories, with Holly in her childhood home and Max in the cave.
Fans on Reddit and TikTok have several theories, but they relate to the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which we won’t detail here.
We know Henry killed his mother and sister, leaving his injured father to bear the blame. Henry, of course, ended up at Hawkins Laboratory, where he met Eleven, who banished him with her powers, transforming him into Vecna.
Meanwhile, Holly (played by Nell Fisher), Mike and Nancy’s sister, was abducted by a Demogorgon in her home, where her mother attempted to defend her in a bloody battle.
It remains to be seen why Holly now has a cassette tape with I Think We’re Alone Now, the 80s song by Tiffany that Henry gave her, whom she called Mr. No Name.
Netflix’s Tudum website explains that this name “comes from the name of Mrs. Whatsit from A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L’Engle’s classic 1962 science fiction novel,” which Holly was reading in the fifth season.
Max, played by Sadie Sink, remains in a coma in Hawkins after nearly dying at the hands of Vecna.
The others and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) are doing everything they can to save their friends and the people of Hawkins.
Why Does Music Seem to Stop Vecna?

The answer to this mystery remains elusive.
Joyce Byers speculated in GameRant that “the music helps redirect the victim’s attention to reality and away from Vecna’s mind games.”
When Max’s end seemed near, listening to Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill anchored her to reality, keeping her alive.
We also learned in the fourth season that Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s 1950 song Dream A Little Dream Of Me helped Henry Creel’s father, Victor, escape his son’s manipulative control.
Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) realized, after visiting Victor in a mental institution, that music can penetrate a person’s consciousness and free them from Vecna’s control.
Byers also highlights the importance of Hawkins’ radio station, which features a show hosted by Robin and Steve Harrington, played by Joe Keery.
“Introducing a radio station in the fifth season is intentional and purposeful,” she writes. “Radio stations are ideal for reaching the masses from a single location.”
“And if the main characters taking control of the radio station are those who know the connection between music and Vecna’s curse, then they can provide the citizens of Hawkins with constant protection under the guise of entertainment.”
What’s the Connection Between Vecna and Will?

Noah Schnapp recently told Deadline that this will be explored, as the series still needs to delve deeper into this storyline.
He added, “It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, so I had to rewatch the movies, because the relationship between Harry Potter and Voldemort is very similar to Will and Vecna, exploring those parallels and what that means.”
He also assured that he is “very happy and excited about all of our characters and how the series ends.”
“I think it does a great job of closing each individual story and paying homage to everyone,” he stated.
Will This Really Be the End?
With the series concluding, the temptation to create a lucrative sequel may arise.
According to Variety, Stranger Things has ranked in the Top 10 in 93 countries where Netflix measures audiences, and the fourth season was the first English-language series to surpass 1 billion hours viewed on the platform.
However, despite its popularity, the Duffer Brothers have ruled out a sequel.
“This is really the end of the story of Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Steve, and all of these characters, and of Hawkins in particular,” Ross Duffer said, according to GamesRadar.
Matt added, “There’s nothing else that we feel is worth exploring.”
“The book is closed, and the ending wouldn’t be as impactful if we left it open for a possible sequel,” he concluded.
