A shooting in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning left two people dead and at least 14 others injured, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and raising questions about the suspect’s motives. The incident, which unfolded in a popular entertainment district, underscores the ongoing challenges of gun violence in the United States.

The shooting occurred around 2:00 a.m. Local time in downtown Austin, near the popular 6th Street entertainment area. According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, drove a large SUV repeatedly around the block before opening fire on patrons outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden with a handgun.

Diagne then exited the vehicle and continued shooting at people walking along 6th Street. Officers who were already stationed in the area confronted Diagne within a minute and fatally shot him at an intersection nearby.

Possible Ideological Motivation Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating the shooting as a potential act of terrorism. Alex Doran, acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s San Antonio office, stated that there were “indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” though he cautioned it was too early to determine a definitive motive.

Investigators found a Quran in Diagne’s SUV and reported he was wearing a hoodie with the phrase “Property of Allah” on it, as well as clothing described as Islamic garb. Some reports suggest a possible connection to recent U.S. Actions in Iran, though officials have not confirmed this link.

According to the Associated Press, Diagne was originally from Senegal and became a naturalized U.S. Citizen in 2013.

Fourteen patients were treated at local hospitals, with three remaining in critical condition as of Sunday morning. At least four others have been released, according to St. David’s HealthCare.
