The annual vehicle registration process for 2026 began on February 1, initiating a mandatory requirement for all motorized vehicle owners. This process is a key funding source for municipalities, allocating resources to local goods and services such as parks, public lighting, and social programs, according to the Internal Revenue Service (SII).

Where and How to Pay Registration Fees

Registration can be completed at the corresponding municipality, either in person at transit offices or at designated locations within each community. Those changing municipalities from the previous year must request a transfer form, complete personal and vehicle details, and make the payment at the same time.

Accepted payment methods include cash, debit or credit cards, and current checks.

Payment Deadlines by Vehicle Type

The payment schedule depends on the vehicle category:

  • March 31: private vehicles, motorcycles, vans, ambulances, floats, luxury rental cars, tourist or special service vehicles, station wagons, trucks and trailers up to 1,750 kilograms.

  • May 31: taxis and buses.

  • September 30: cargo vehicles, scooters, mopeds, tractor trucks, agricultural or industrial tractors, and self-propelled machinery.

Required Documents for Registration

The required documentation varies depending on whether the vehicle is already registered or is new:

  • Existing Vehicle: previous registration, valid technical inspection or homologation certificate, valid SOAP (vehicle inspection certificate), and ownership card or title.

  • New Vehicle: purchase invoice, registration in the Civil Registry, corresponding certificates, and a valid SOAP until March 31 of the following year.

Calculating the 2026 Registration Fee

The amount due is determined by the vehicle’s tax assessment. Official lists of light and heavy vehicles are available on the SII website.

In the “Vehicle Tax Assessment” section, you can search by SII code and year of manufacture or by entering the vehicle’s characteristics. For the latter option, select the 2026 tax year, the vehicle category, and complete the requested information to obtain the exact amount.
