Mercedes Dominates Australian Grand Prix Qualifying, Ferrari Struggles

Melbourne, Australia – Mercedes showcased its true speed in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix on Saturday, March 7, 2026, leaving rivals trailing as George Russell secured pole position. The performance marks a significant shift for the team, signaling a return to form reminiscent of their dominant years.

Russell topped the qualifying session without significant challenge, demonstrating a level of control that allowed him to dictate the pace. He was joined on the front row by teammate Kimi Antonelli, a powerful statement of Mercedes’ current strength. Antonelli’s qualifying wasn’t without drama, although, as he narrowly avoided missing the session after a crash in final practice damaged his car. Mechanics worked furiously to rebuild the machine in under two and a half hours, a feat he credited to their “heroic” efforts. A rare software issue that sent Max Verstappen into the barriers also provided Antonelli with crucial extra time.

Further back, Charles Leclerc could only manage fourth place for Ferrari, finishing eight-tenths of a second behind Russell. “I was nowhere near Mercedes,” Leclerc admitted after qualifying. “I thought the gap would be three-to-four tenths, but it’s more than that – I’m disappointed.” The result underscores Ferrari’s current disadvantage as they navigate a season focused on development for the 2027 regulation changes.

Team principal Vasseur acknowledged the disparity, stating, “Mercedes was on another planet. We made some mistakes, but we also need to work.”

Lewis Hamilton, now driving for Ferrari, will start seventh, hampered by issues with the car’s power deployment. The seven-time world champion experienced problems with the car’s recharging system during the session, resulting in a qualifying performance below expectations. McLaren also appeared to be holding back, with Oscar Piastri qualifying fifth and Lando Norris in sixth, suggesting their pace may not be fully unlocked.

Racing Bulls enjoyed a strong showing, placing both Lawson and Lindblad in the top 10. Bortoleto also impressed, battling fiercely with the Audi before a technical issue ended his session. Aston Martin’s struggles continued, with Alonso qualifying 17th, although Alpine and Williams faced difficulties and finished near the back of the grid despite utilizing Mercedes engines.

The Australian Grand Prix promises to be an exciting race, with reliability now a key concern for all teams as they push these new and largely untested machines to their limits. The qualifying results set the stage for a compelling battle on Sunday, as teams look to capitalize on their positions and contend for victory.
