Lavrov: Russia, Iran & the End of US Hegemony in the Middle East

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the longest-serving foreign minister in the world since 2004, has reiterated his strong stance against Western policies, particularly concerning Iran, and Ukraine. His recent comments signal a deepening rift between Russia and the West, and a potential realignment of global power dynamics.

Lavrov has sharply criticized U.S. And Israeli policies toward Iran, deeming them a violation of international law and a dangerous escalation. While Washington and Tel Aviv reportedly seek “regime change” in Iran, Lavrov characterizes the Islamic Republic as a legitimate partner and a vital member of the United Nations. This position underscores Russia’s growing alignment with Iran amidst broader geopolitical tensions.

Lavrov views the attacks on Iran as desperate attempts by a declining hegemonic power to create chaos. Russia, in contrast, is positioning itself as a neutral mediator, promoting a “Eurasian security architecture” with the BRICS nations, free from external interference. This development underscores Russia’s ambition to reshape the global security landscape.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Lavrov has indicated that the Kremlin no longer seeks a compromise with Kyiv. He dismissed negotiations as merely a “cover” for Western arms deliveries. This statement suggests a hardening of Russia’s position and a prolonged conflict.

Lavrov’s vision extends beyond the Donbass region, openly speaking of “Recent Russia” and asserting that the “liberation” of Russian-speaking territories is a historical necessity. He portrays Ukraine not as a sovereign state, but as a “Nazi regime created by the West” used as a battering ram against Moscow.

He issued a stark warning to the West: those who demand security guarantees without respecting Russian interests will receive a response on the battlefield. This statement highlights the escalating tensions and the potential for further conflict. According to a press release on March 3, Foreign Minister Lavrov discussed these issues during a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
