Pop superstar Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in California on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to reports from local authorities.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the 44-year-old singer was stopped around 9:30 p.m. Local time in Ventura County after receiving reports of a black BMW traveling at a high speed and making erratic maneuvers on US-101, according to reports.
Authorities stated that Spears exhibited signs of impairment and agreed to a field sobriety test. She was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The singer was alone in the vehicle.
Spears was taken to a medical facility for a blood test, a standard procedure in such cases in California. The results of the chemical tests are currently pending and the incident remains under investigation.
She was released from custody early Thursday morning and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
A representative for Spears described the incident as an “unfortunate” event, stating, “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.” The representative added, “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
