French Economy: High Alert Despite Stabilization

Despite a seeming stabilization, concerns remain about the French economy, according to Hervé Kermarrec, President of the GSC. “Cette apparente stabilisation ne doit en aucun cas nous rassurer, nous restons à un niveau inédit,” Kermarrec cautioned. The French economy has faced significant headwinds over the past five years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, inflation, rising costs, a downturn in the real estate market, and political uncertainty.

Kermarrec was elected President of the GSC association by its board of directors on October 8, 2025, for a three-year term. His election comes as businesses navigate a complex economic landscape, and he continues his commitment to protecting business leaders. The GSC provides voluntary insurance solutions designed to protect business owners, their families, and provide financial stability during business cessation.

Kermarrec brings extensive experience in business leadership to his role at the GSC. He began his career as a real estate negotiator in Nantes before joining the family business, Kermarrec Immobilier, in 1997. He became President of the group in 2007, growing it to 160 employees and 27 agencies across Rennes, Saint-Malo, Vannes, Brest, and Nantes. His leadership at Kermarrec Immobilier demonstrates a track record of navigating economic challenges and fostering growth.

Beyond his role at the GSC, Kermarrec is actively involved in advocating for businesses through his work with MEDEF. He previously served as President of MEDEF Ille-et-Vilaine for five years and was elected President of MEDEF Bretagne in 2020. He is also a member of the MEDEF executive council. Hervé Kermarrec’s LinkedIn profile details his extensive experience and network within the French business community. His involvement in these organizations underscores his dedication to supporting entrepreneurs and fostering a favorable business environment.

Kermarrec emphasized the importance of risk awareness for business leaders, stating, “Each business leader must be aware of the risks involved to decide whether or not to protect themselves.” The GSC’s insurance offerings aim to provide a safety net for entrepreneurs, allowing them to rebound from potential setbacks. This focus on resilience is particularly relevant in the current economic climate, where many companies are facing increased vulnerability. He also recently appeared with Bernard Cohen-Hadad, President of the CPME Paris, in Les Vraies Voix de l’emploi on September 2, 2025.

The GSC’s leadership transition, with Hervé Kermarrec taking the presidency, signals a continued focus on supporting French businesses through economic uncertainty. The association’s role in providing risk mitigation tools is increasingly vital as companies grapple with ongoing challenges and prepare for potential future disruptions.
