Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Symptoms of kidney cancer are once again drawing attention following the recent passing of Indonesian singer Vidi Aldiano on Saturday, March 7, 2026, after a six-year battle with the disease. Understanding the signs and risk factors associated with kidney cancer is crucial for early detection and improved outcomes.
Throughout his treatment, Vidi Aldiano frequently shared updates on his condition via social media. In 2023, he revealed that his cancer had metastasized, meaning it had spread to other parts of his body. This news prompted renewed interest in the disease and its potential impact.

What is Kidney Cancer?
Internal medicine specialist and hematology-oncology consultant Andhika Rachman explained that kidney cancer is a malignancy originating from kidney cells, particularly the epithelial tubule cells responsible for filtering urine.
The most common type of kidney cancer found in adults is Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC).
“RCC accounts for approximately 85 to 90 percent of all types of kidney cancer,” Dr. Rachman stated.
One of the biggest challenges in detecting this disease is that early-stage kidney cancer often doesn’t present any noticeable symptoms. This can make early diagnosis demanding, highlighting the importance of routine medical checkups.
According to Dr. Rachman, in many cases, kidney cancer is discovered incidentally during routine radiological examinations, such as ultrasounds or CT scans, performed for other health concerns.
However, as the tumor grows, certain signs may commence to appear. In the medical community, three primary signs are known as the classic triad of kidney cancer:
• Blood in the urine (hematuria)
• Pain in the flank or lower back
• A lump in the abdomen or side
“These three signs are known as the classic triad of kidney cancer, although in practice, they don’t always appear in all patients,” Dr. Rachman said.
Other Symptoms to Watch For
In addition to the classic triad, several other symptoms can emerge as the tumor progresses. According to various medical sources, other signs to be aware of include:
• Red, pink, or cola-colored urine
• Persistent back or side pain
• Unexplained weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Extreme fatigue
• Fever that comes and goes without a clear cause
In advanced stages, symptoms can become more widespread as the cancer has spread to other organs. Patients may experience anemia, bone pain, or chronic cough if the cancer has spread to the lungs.
“it is important for the public to seek medical attention if they experience blood in their urine or persistent flank pain,” Dr. Rachman urged.
Kidney Cancer Risk Factors
The exact cause of the DNA mutations that lead to kidney cancer remains unknown. However, several factors are known to increase the risk of developing the disease. Some of these risk factors include:
1. Lifestyle
Smoking is a major trigger for kidney cancer. This risk can be gradually reduced after a person stops smoking.
2. Physical Condition
Obesity and high blood pressure are known to increase the workload on the kidneys and are associated with a higher risk of cancer.
3. Certain Medical Conditions
Patients undergoing long-term dialysis or exposed to certain industrial chemicals also have a higher risk.
4. Genetic Factors
Certain genetic conditions, such as von Hippel-Lindau disease, Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex, are also linked to the growth of kidney tumors.
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent cancer, several healthy lifestyle choices can help lower the risk. Some recommended steps include:
• Quitting smoking
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Exercising regularly for at least 30 minutes each day
• Controlling blood pressure
• Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables
• Limiting alcohol consumption
These steps can help maintain kidney health and reduce the risk of various chronic diseases.
