Siemens Secures 2 Billion Contract to Supply SBB with Up to 200 Double-Decker Trains
Siemens has finalized a major agreement with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to modernize its commuter fleet, securing a contract valued at 2 billion for the delivery of novel double-decker trains. The deal focuses on the procurement of the “Desiro Dosto” model, a high-capacity rolling stock solution designed specifically for the Swiss rail network.
Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will supply up to 200 double-decker units. These trains are designated for S-Bahn services, where they are expected to increase passenger capacity and improve the efficiency of regional commuter corridors. Siemens recently presented the new train model, highlighting its technical suitability for the requirements of the Swiss transport landscape.
The scale of this multi-billion order underscores a strategic effort by SBB to expand its transit infrastructure and meet growing demand within its urban and suburban networks. By investing in high-capacity double-decker trains, the railway is positioning itself to better manage passenger flow and modernize its aging fleet.
This significant procurement highlights the ongoing priority placed on rail modernization within the European transport sector. The decision reflects a broader industry trend toward increasing rolling stock capacity to support sustainable urban mobility and reduce reliance on road transport in densely populated regions.
