Andris Sprūds, runājot Latvijas Radio, skaidroja, ka Latvijas karavīri šobrīd piedalās vairākās starptautiskajās misijās, tostarp NATO misijā Irākā un ANO misijās Libānā un Izraēlā. Ministrs uzsvēra, ka šobrīd nav nekādu plānu par papildu iesaisti Hormuza šauruma operācijās. Viņš atgādināja, ka, ja šāda vajadzība rastos, Latvijai būtu jāsaņem pieprasījums, un tikai pēc tam varētu sākt izvērtēt potenciālu līdzdalību, ņemot vērā šīs operācijas ietekmi uz austrumu flanga drošību un citiem stratēģiskajiem faktoriem.
Latvia is currently not planning to participate in any potential operations in the Strait of Hormuz, Defense Minister Andris Sprūds stated on Latvian Radio. The announcement comes amid heightened international concern over maritime security in the region and potential disruptions to global oil supplies.
Sprūds explained that Latvian soldiers are presently involved in several international missions, including a NATO mission in Iraq and United Nations missions in Lebanon and Israel. He emphasized that there are no current plans for additional involvement in the Hormuz Strait area.
Should a request for assistance arise, Sprūds indicated that Latvia would first need to receive a formal request before evaluating potential participation. Any decision would carefully consider the impact of such an operation on the security of the eastern flank and other strategic factors, he added.
The development underscores Latvia’s commitment to existing international security obligations while maintaining a cautious approach to new deployments in volatile regions. The minister’s comments reflect a broader European assessment of the situation, balancing the need to protect vital shipping lanes with concerns about escalating regional tensions.
