The Future of Insurance: AI, Digital Transformation, and Supervision

Digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and regulatory oversight are shaping the future of the insurance industry, according to Augusto Iglesias, a key figure in the sector’s evolution.

Speaking at a recent industry forum, Iglesias emphasized that insurers must embrace technological change while preparing for increasing scrutiny from fresh supervisory bodies. He highlighted the launch of the European Union’s first AI testing environment as a critical step toward ensuring accountability in intelligent systems.

The initiative, activated by the Spanish government, aims to create a controlled space where AI applications can be evaluated for compliance, safety, and ethical use before wider deployment. Iglesias noted that such frameworks are essential not only for innovation but also for building public trust in automated decision-making.

He also pointed to the operational start of Spain’s Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence, which will oversee adherence to emerging AI regulations across industries, including insurance. The agency’s role, he said, will be pivotal in monitoring how firms implement AI-driven underwriting, claims processing, and customer service tools.

Iglesias further referenced the introduction of a regulatory “sandbox” for AI, designed to allow companies to test novel applications under real-world conditions while remaining within legal boundaries. This approach, he argued, supports innovation without compromising safety or transparency.

According to Iglesias, insurers that proactively align with these developments will be better positioned to navigate the shifting landscape — balancing agility with responsibility as AI becomes more central to risk assessment and policy management.

He concluded that the convergence of digital tools, intelligent systems, and structured oversight marks a defining moment for the industry, one that demands both technical readiness and regulatory awareness from all stakeholders.
