Chile’s government has confirmed the launch of a national gas subsidy program targeting the country’s most vulnerable households, with payments set to begin in June 2026 through direct bank transfers. President José Antonio Kast announced the initiative on April 1, 2026, as part of the expanded “Chile Sale Adelante” economic plan designed to counter rising fuel costs. The subsidy will reach approximately 7.5 million families classified within the 80% most vulnerable segment of Chile’s Social Registry of Households. Officials emphasized that eligibility requires no application process—municipalities will automatically identify beneficiaries using existing registry data and distribute funds transferred from the Subsecretariat of Regional Development (Subdere). The benefit aims to alleviate winter energy expenses by enabling recipients to purchase liquefied petroleum gas at participating retailers. While early discussions included the possibility of delivering 15-kilogram gas cylinders, the government has since indicated flexibility in implementation, allowing local administrations to choose between physical gas vouchers, discount coupons, or equivalent monetary transfers based on regional needs. To verify eligibility, individuals can consult their status in the Social Registry of Households via the official government portal using their RUT and Unique Key. No special calculations or exceptions will be made for extreme climate zones, authorities confirmed. The program represents a $225 million investment in direct household support, forming one of two new measures added to the broader economic relief package unveiled during the second session of the “Chile Sale Adelante” committee at La Moneda Palace. Municipal associations have noted they await formal implementation details from the central government as preparations continue ahead of the June rollout.
