Spain has launched a new national helpline for victims of road traffic accidents, offering free, confidential support 365 days a year.
The service, known as 018, went live on Thursday, April 23, 2026, and is operated by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) under the Ministry of the Interior.
Available daily from 8:00 a.m. To 9:00 p.m., the helpline provides access to social workers, psychologists, and lawyers trained specifically to assist traffic accident victims and their families.
Staff offer personalized guidance on medical, psychological, social, and legal resources, help navigate post-accident procedures, and commit to follow-up support for up to one year in cases of serious incidents.
The service can be reached by dialing 018, via WhatsApp at 645 713 823, by email at victimastrafico@dgt.es, or through an online form on the DGT’s website.
Support is available in 50 languages in addition to Spain’s co-official languages, ensuring broad accessibility across the country.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska presented the initiative alongside Jeanne Picard, president of the Stop Accidents association, who remarked, “Ojalá que nadie lo tenga que descolgar,” expressing hope that the number would never require to be used.
Grande-Marlaska emphasized that the 018 line does not replace existing support networks but strengthens them by improving access to information, accompaniment, and specialized, continuous care for victims.
The launch underscores Spain’s ongoing efforts to enhance victim assistance following road traffic incidents, particularly as concerns persist over the long-term impact of such tragedies on individuals and families.
