For the third consecutive night, tensions flared in Loosdrecht as protesters clashed with police during a demonstration against the planned asylum seeker center in the vacant town hall building.
According to the Wijdemeren municipality, at least one officer was injured and several people were arrested after the demonstration turned volatile around 8:30 p.m. Local time on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Mayor Mark Verheijen issued an emergency order following reports that demonstrators threw heavy fireworks, eggs, and full soda cans toward law enforcement personnel.
The unrest followed a morning court hearing where officials confirmed the asylum seekers’ arrival would be delayed until May due to insufficient police capacity, despite earlier plans to house them in the town hall starting that day. Residents had filed legal objections to the proposed shelter, prompting the expedited hearing.
Verheijen emphasized that while peaceful protest is permitted, actions endangering public safety or property will not be tolerated. “Such behavior has no place in a democratic society,” he stated, adding that authorities are coordinating with police to implement appropriate measures and will escalate response if necessary.
This marks the third straight evening of disturbances in the North Holland municipality, with police repeatedly deployed to restore order amid ongoing opposition to the asylum seeker reception facility.
